The Benefits of Joining SASSA’s PREP Program

Recently The Chronicle of Higher Education published the article, “Odds Are, Your Doctorate Will Not Prepare You for a Profession Outside Academe.” Though such articles can feel discouraging if you are close to finishing your degree or have been struggling on the job market, this one does not intend to be. In fact, it offers sound advice for anyone looking for alternatives to an academic career. One of its main take home messages is that if you are thinking about a career outside of academia, you need work experience beyond what your graduate education provides.

This is where SASSA’s PREP program can help! One of our priorities at SASSA is to ensure students, both K-12 and collegiate, take part in experiential learning, something the CHE article highlights. As a PREP participant, students will gain valuable experience in various settings and have the opportunity to network with important institutions across the Twin Cities. Whether leading one of our SASSA in the Field projects as an intern, developing educational modules, or helping implement our SASSA in the Classroom programming, PREP participants obtain a skill set more akin to those valued in traditional job markets as well as evidence of this experience on their CVs or resumes.

So, if you are considering a career outside of academia or wish to be prepared for all opportunities life may throw at you, SASSA’s PREP program can help!
